When the waters rose around our house, we weren’t concerned. When a Coastguard helicopter hovered over us, we waved them away. When water reached the barn, we weren’t worried. “We’re fine,” we said. The wind was strong enough to roll the neighbors barn like a tumble weed before it broke up. “It was an old barn,” we whispered. But, when the water began to approach the front steps of the house, we lost our confidence. We hadn’t thought to move the furniture or clothing or valuables. With hands full of ‘things’ and food, we sought refuge on the second floor.
We huddled together, shivering and silent. A few days later, we came down the stairs to find the living room in ruins and the carpet black with muddy debris. Still, we were alive and grateful. The following year we made sandbags.

Once my mother realized that decorative aggregates could be used to create beautiful, unique enhancements on almost any concrete substrate in our father’s business office, she made the idea a reality with a type of insuperable enthusiasm I didn’t think a human with depression could possess. Although I was personally excited about the new livelihood that she acquired as she hired architectural experts to begin the work, this sense of elation quickly died down once I realized my father didn’t approve of the initiative she’d taken in changing the aesthetic dimensions of his work space. There marriage had been on the rocks for quite some time, and I’m personally persuaded that this last act on my mother’s part was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The divorce-which was finalized just six months later-always reminds me that it’s important for couples to communicate with one another.

People often allow alcohol to bring trouble into their lives. They drink too much and do things they shouldn’t. Most of these issues arise when people leave the safety of their homes. The problem is that alcohol brings spontaneous obstacles into play.
Suppose you’re sitting on your porch having a drink and hanging out with friends, no problem. However, when you decide you and your friends need to go on a drunken reconnaissance mission, then the obstacles arise. Where did that car come from? It wasn’t there a minute ago. Ditch, that ditch was never here before. We must have some fast ditch diggers around here! Cutting through the neighbor’s yard never seemed all that daunting before, but now they have installed instant hedging, attacking innocent passers-by who have consumed one too many. So, if you must drink alcohol, do so from the obstacle-free safety of home.

My friend, Jimmy, and I were eating lunch together yesterday. We have been best friends since we were born and we had lived right next door to each other until he had to move to California. While we were eating lunch together, he mentioned that he had been thinking about sending some Harrogate flowers to Suzzie. He told me about how for the longest time he’s liked Suzzie, but doesn’t know if she likes him to. He says that he thinks this will be a great way to find out if she likes him, or if they should just be friends. I told Jimmy that it was a great idea and I even helped him deliver them. Today Suzzie called Jimmy thanking him for the gift, and asking him if he would want to see a movie sometime. Jimmy happily agreed, and is now looking up movie times on his phone.
